8 Telltale Signs of a Mushroom Allergy
Published March 25, 2022
Whether used to complement other foods or as the main course, mushrooms are a nutrient-dense and delicious addition to the diet. However, while many people appreciate mushrooms, commonly known as fungi, a small minority of those who consume them may experience allergic reactions. Mushroom allergies are rare and distinctive in that they can manifest symptoms not only through ingestion but also through skin contact or inhalation of airborne spores, which resemble microscopic seeds.
Mushroom allergies can strike individuals of any age, even if they have consumed mushrooms for an extended amount of time. An allergy to mushrooms activates the immune system of an individual. The body considers certain compounds to be harmful and creates IgE antibodies against them. These antibodies stimulate the release of histamine, which results in the signs of an allergic reaction.
8 Mushroom Allergy Symptoms
The symptoms of allergy to mushrooms vary significantly between individuals, ranging from minor to severe reactions that can occur minutes to hours after exposure. An allergic reaction to mushrooms might cause any of the following signs and symptoms:
1. Mouth, lips, and/or throat swelling
Certain individuals report swelling of the lips, mouth, and throat as a result of consuming mushrooms. Swelling of the neck can make breathing difficult. A severe allergic reaction, known as anaphylaxis, can occur, initiating a series of symptoms. The symptoms include a rapid drop in blood pressure, breathing difficulty, and fainting, requiring quick clinical assistance.
2. Hives or skin rashes
Hives are a frequently occurring side effect of allergic responses. Hives or wheals are itchy, raised reddish, or pale skin swellings. They are caused by the mast cells releasing histamine and other substances. Swellings may arise one after the other, or they may be large and spread apart. In addition, these swellings may merge together, resulting in larger swellings.
The most common allergy to trigger nausea and/or vomiting is a food allergy. A reaction happens when the immune system reacts badly to a food or a component included in it, activating a protective response after mistakingly identifying the component as a threat.
Food allergies can also result in diarrhea and hives, congestion, and tightening of the throat.
Diarrhea can also be caused by malabsorption. When this happens, the small intestine has difficulty absorbing nutrients from the food you’re eating. In addition, certain food intolerances may result in malabsorption.
Individuals sensitive to molds and mildew may have an allergy to mushrooms. Also, if they have asthma, mushrooms may trigger asthma attacks. Therefore, if you have any of these sensitivities, you should avoid mushrooms because they have been known to trigger asthma attacks.
6. Runny nose and/or watery eyes
A runny nose and/or watery eyes are a reaction that occurs in the eyes, nose, and throat whenever allergens in the air cause the body to release histamine.
Mold, which can occasionally be found on mushrooms, is one of the common causes of allergic rhinitis.
Several gastrointestinal irritants frequently cause most mushroom poisoning. Symptoms often manifest between 20 minutes to 4 hours of mushroom consumption, including vomiting, nausea, cramping, and diarrhea.
8. Stomach cramping or bloating
Gastrointestinal problems associated with mushroom consumption may suggest a mushroom allergy. While mushrooms are not a typical food allergen, if you are allergic to mold, you may develop a food allergy if you eat mushrooms. In addition, if mushrooms cause an allergic reaction, the intestinal lining may become inflamed and swollen due to increased histamine levels.
Anyone can get allergic reactions at any time. It is possible for someone who has been eating mushrooms without incident to develop an allergy to them suddenly.
Mushrooms and other mold products like yeast should be avoided as soon as you discover that you are sensitive to them.
